    L-Menthol Pharma

BASF's pharmaceutical-grade L-Menthol is an synthetically produced organic compound. L-Menthol can be obtained as either a white solid mass or in form of white flakes solid at room temperature.

L-Menthol is widely used in clinical and pharmaceutical practice for oral and topical formulations. Topical applications of L-Menthol includes the treatment of local pain, pruritus and allergic dermatitis. Oral formulations include the treatment of diggestive disorders, such as for example irritable bowel disease, and the use in the oral cavity due to its antiseptic and anesthetic properties. A further established application of L-Menthol is in form of inhalations for the symptomatic relief of sinusitis, rhinitis, bronchitis and similar condistions.

    Leading in L-Menthol production

The main production site of BASF is by the Rhine River, in Ludwigshafen, Germany. Ludwigshafen is the company's largest production site, global headquarters, and the center of its research activities.

BASF’s long tradition in the aroma industry dates back to the early 80’s when it started running its own Citral production plant in Ludwigshafen.
Early 2000 the construction of a world-scale Lysmeral® production plant started.
In 2004, responding to the increasing customer demands for terpenes, BASF created a larger Citral complex with downstream (i.e. Citronellol, Linalool and Geraniol) in Ludwigshafen. And in 2012 BASF opened the world’s largest menthol production plant in Ludwigshafen. Being a well-recognized partner for the F&F industry, BASF is constantly working to strength its global footprint and increase its contribution to the aroma ingredients market. We are currently building a second aroma ingredients complex in Kuantan, Malaysia. Until 2017 a complete “Verbund” site will be installed step by step producing Isoprenol, Citral, Citronellol, and L- Menthol.

The cool freshness of Menthol: Ressource-efficient Production of the popular flavor by BASF

Menthol is the very essence of freshness. Whether in toothpaste, chewing gum or candies, the minty taste of the world's most-sold flavor ingredient can be found in countless everyday products. But menthol owes its popularity not only to its fresh taste, but also to its cooling effect on the skin and mucous membranes. This is why it is often used for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics like cooling ointments, inhalations, deodorants and shower gels. The worldwide demand of 25,000 to 30,000 metric tons per year already exceeds the available supply -- and is constantly growing because more and more new products contain menthol. BASF put the world's largest production plant for nature-identical menthol into operation 2012. A completely new process means it can be produced reliably and in consistently good quality.
