      Topical foams are growing in importance in the topical dermatological field. These can take the form of aerosol foams with a dense, creamy consistency (e.g. mousse) or non-aerosol pump foams with a looser, less dense consistency. There are numerous advantages associated with foams: (1) They allow for the clean, targeted application of APIs that must be delivered from a liquid. (2) In aerosol systems all of the ingredients are typically completely solubilized in the primary package, thereby circumventing issues of physical stability that are associated with other dosage forms. (3) Foams can be a superior choice for vaginal or rectal applications.

      Some of the key functional excipients that BASF offers for foam formulations include:


    The air-water interface of foam cells (bubbles) is stabilized by emulsifiers. For aerosol foams any of our Kolliphor® series may be considered. For non-aerosol aqueous foams our Kolliphor® P series (poloxamers) are a superior choice.

    Consistency factors

    Fatty alcohols (e.g. Kolliwax® SA, Kolliwax® CA or Kolliwax® CSA 50) can be used to both increase the stability of foam lamellae (the thin film of liquid between bubbles) and optimize the sensory properties.


    Prior to extrusion as a foam APIs must be dissolved in the formulation. Our Kollisolv® and Kolliphor® products, as well as low molecular weight polyvinylpyrrolidones (Kollidon® 12 PF, Kollidon® 17 PF, Kollidon® 25 and Kollidon® 30) are all excellent options to consider as solubilizers.
