Taste masking for solid and liquid oral dosage forms – our functional solutions
Taste masking is necessary when a drug administered orally has an unpleasant taste. Whether you are looking for taste masking in a solid or a liquid dosage form, BASF has a whole range of solutions at hand.
Active ingredients with unpleasant taste are a challenge for formulators. Many drugs being developed are bitter in taste, yet patients and consumers generally expect a pleasant administration experience, regardless of the medication. And on the generic side, there is significant competitive pressure to ensure that your product at least does not fall short in patient compliance, if pharmaceutical marketers want to compete successfully.
A taste masking solution for every formulation
- Taste masking for both solid and liquid dosage forms
- Solutions for moderate & strong taste masking depending on drug bitterness
- Next generation taste masking for pellets & particles, enabling taste masked orally disintegrating tablets (ODT)
BASF offer taste masking solutions for solid and liquid dosage forms
Masking unpleasant taste is key for both solid and liquid dosage forms. BASF offers taste masking solutions for both. And, depending on the bitterness of your drug and the target release profile, you can choose between moderate and maximum taste masking effect.
For tablets and other solid dosage forms, we offer film formers that effectively prevent the active ingredient from reaching the taste buds. If a moderate effect is sufficient, a thin film of Kollicoat® SR 30 D can be applied. If a maximum of effectiveness is required due to a very bitter drug or a minimum of film allowed, our lead taste masking polymer Kollicoat® Smartseal 30 D is the choice to go for.
The formulation of ODTs or other small particle-based dosage forms can help to improve patient compliance. However, taste masking of pellets or particles is particularly important – and particularly challenging. As confirmed by leading coating experts in the industry, Kollicoat® Smartseal 30 D is the best polymer to tackle this challenge due to its combination of taste masking effectiveness at very low coating levels and non-stickyness during processing.
