The glass transition temperature (Tg) is an important parameter to consider when working with polymeric films or matrices like e.g. in solid dispersion applications or film coating. It defines the temperature when an amorphous polymer changes from a hard and relatively brittle "glassy" state into a deformable state and vice versa. The glass transition temperature of each polymer can be reduced by introducing plasticizing substances that impact the interaction of polymer chains. In the area of solid dispersions such a reduction of glass transition temperature might be necessary for e.g. decreasing the processing temperature in a hot melt extrusion process or reducing the brittleness of the final solid dispersion.
