Your Sustainable Sourcing Partners
BASF works with its suppliers to minimize risks and to advance an industry transformation towards sustainability.
BASF wants to ensure that its renewable-based products are made from sustainably sourced raw materials. Our key renewable raw materials are palm oil, palm kernel oil and fish oil, which are used to produce pharmaceutical APIs, excipients and processing aids.

Calculating Carbon Footprint
By the end of 2021, BASF will become the first provider of a tool for the calculation of its carbon footprint portfolio. In its ibuprofen manufacturing process alone, BASF has reduced its carbon footprint by 16% since the first study was published in 2002 on efficiency improvement of the entire process at the company’s manufacturing site in Bishop, Texas. This sustainability assessment was conducted internally following methodology ISO-standards of life-cycle assessment (LCA) and elaborated on by an expert group at Technical University of Berlin.
Our Commitments To Sustainability
BASF is a proud member of the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Initiative (PSCI), whose vision is to establish and promote responsible practices that will continuously improve social, health, safety and environmentally sustainable outcomes for supply chains.
We follow the PSCI Principles for Responsible Supply Chain Management, which address the five areas of responsible business practice: ethics, human rights and labor, health and safety, environment, and management systems.
BASF also supports the United Nations in the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which create the framework for sustainable business practices at the economic, social and environmental levels.

Responsible Care
BASF has embraced the goals of the chemical industry's voluntary Responsible Care initiative and applies them to the entire BASF Group. The corporate unit Environmental Protection, Health and Safety defines concrete goals for the key areas of Responsible Care, ensures their implementation and monitors their performance.
